December 10 is celebrated as International Human Rights Day. In anticipation of the holiday, the staff of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia organized a discussion on the topic "The Role of National Human Rights Institutions in the Context of the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights: Contemporary Challenges."
The event was opened by the Human Rights Defender of Armenia Anahit Manasyan. The attendees were welcomed by the UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia, Françoise Jacob, the UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia, Natia Natsvlishvili, and YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan.
Ombudsman Anahit Manasyan and Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission Alyson Kilpatrick presented “The Role of National Human Rights Institutions in the Context of the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights: Current Challenges.”
Human rights education and the effective promotion of human rights were discussed by Siranush Sahakyan, head of the International and Comparative Law Center and human rights defender, and Yeghishe Kirakosyan, representative for international legal affairs.
He specifically noted: "The task of human rights education is not simply to share information about knowledge, skills, and mechanisms, but to form attitudes, to build such qualities under which we will be able to overcome difficulties and have our human rights protected."
At the end of the event, the launch of the Human Rights Winter School was announced. An exchange of ideas also took place.
