Discussion at the American University of Armenia

On May 27, the American University of Armenia (AUA) hosted a panel discussion titled "Independence and Identity: A Discussion on Possible Constitutional Amendments." The event was attended by university alumni and experts who have studied the legal and political components of the issue.

Siranush Sahakyan, Head of the "International and Comparative Law Center," also participated in the panel discussion. The human rights advocate shared her past experience with constitutional changes. She described the processes that occurred before and after referendums and discussed the crucial role the Constitution plays in shaping and preserving national identity and values.

AUA Professor Dr. Vahram Ter-Matevosyan spoke about the political aspects of constitutional amendments. Drawing on international examples, Dr. Ter-Matevosyan analyzed the general factors underlying constitutional changes and contextualized them for Armenia within the current geopolitical realities.

Meanwhile, AUA Associate Professor Dr. Armen Mazmanyan presented the long-term implications of constitutional amendments, raising important questions about Armenia's future development path and state-citizen relations.

At the end of the discussion, alumni had the opportunity to ask questions to the speakers. The discussion covered the role of scholars in activating public debates, the impact of foreign policy on constitutional discourse, and a broader public understanding of the issue's urgency.
