With the support of the Open Society Foundations, the International and Comparative Law Center implemented a project aimed at ensuring accountability for human rights violations committed by Azerbaijan during the 2020 war and effectively protecting the rights of those affected.
As part of the project, training sessions were held in cooperation with experts in the field and specialised international non-governmental organisations on opportunities to impose sanctions on those responsible under the Global Magnitsky Act and the European Union’s Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. The sessions also addressed the principle of universal jurisdiction and opportunities to initiate legal proceedings in foreign courts against individuals suspected of committing crimes through its application.
Another component of the project involved advocacy in international forums to raise international awareness of war crimes and human rights violations committed by Azerbaijan against Armenians and to promote discussions and accountability initiatives concerning these acts.
During the implementation of the project, the Center also cooperated with other legal teams working on these issues, contributing to the exchange of experience and the coordination of efforts.
The project was implemented from January 3 to June 30, 2022.
